“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.”
– Into the Wild
Are you waiting for the day when you can take off on a gap year overseas? Or are you planning a road trip for the next long weekend? If you’re stuck at home anxious for the moment where you can fill your pack and jump on the next plane, these five movies are sure to keep you inspired for the journey.
Based on the true story and memoir by Cheryl Strayed, Wild tells the tale of Cheryl’s struggle to accept her mother’s death. She sets out on a journey of perseverance, hiking one-thousand-one-hundred miles on the Pacific Crest Trail in America’s west. It’s not only a tale of grief, but one demonstrating the healing powers of nature and testing your limits in the unknown – as well as demonstrating the beautiful scenery of America’s wilderness.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Walter is a shy, forty-something who’s spent his life with his head down, dreaming of adventure, working hard as a photo manager at Life magazine. Walter is forced out of his comfort zone when a photo negative intended for the magazine’s cover goes missing, resulting in a wild chase through Greenland, Iceland, and Afghanistan. His journeys force him to step into the unknown and become the person he’s always dreamed of being.
Eat Pray Love (2010)
The perfect example of the importance of (occasional) self-indulgence, Eat Pray Love is based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir. The film tells the story of how she wandered the world for a year in search of herself. Her failed marriage left her life fractured, and only through the chaos of life abroad and the love of the people she meets can she find balance again.
Into the Wild (2007)
Chris McCandless was a young American man, who left behind his materialistic life and family in search of something real. A true story, Chris travelled under the alias Alexander Supertramp, encountering others who live nomadic or simple lives like himself and leaving an enduring mark on their lives before his journey into the wild.
The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
Three brothers take a train trip across India following a year of separation after the death of their father. Their surreal and chaotic experiences both challenges and unites them.
